“Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them and try to follow them.”
~ Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888)
“I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”
~ George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
“Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
“Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.”
~ Bill Bradley
A Healthy Path of Ambition
Ambition is a strong desire for a specific accomplishment or advancement. However, we must balance and measure our ambitions with care. Walking a healthy path of ambition requires focus, imagination, and attention to our values.
Without focus, large ambitions can overshadow smaller daily accomplishments of value. Without the necessary skills to meet our objectives, ambition becomes pretension.
Without attention to our deepest values, ambition becomes blind, diminishing its power to improve our lives. A Chinese Proverb states, “He who sacrifices his conscience to ambition burns a picture to obtain the ashes.”
A healthy ambition uses the power of imagination to inspire us to action in each moment. It compels us to continually update and refine our skills. It allows us to play an active role in creating our future. Think of the most desired future that you can imagine. The details of your vision will show specific goals you might need to work on now.
When you can visualize your ambition clearly, the path to your dreams will become clear. Imagine a compelling future filled with your heart’s deepest treasures, then focus on doing each small task along the way with excellence. May your path of ambition bring you much joy!
